X-Men '97 / Trivia

Acting for Two:
- Alison Sealy-Smith voices both Storm and The Adversary.
- Ross Marquand not only voices Professor X, but also Dr. Doom and Apocalypse. Having voiced the Red Skull and Infinity Ultron in previous projects, this means he now has 4 Marvel villains under his belt.
Casting Gag:
- After deciding to step down from the role of Jubilee, Alyson Court now plays Abscissa, Jubilee's virtual reality counterpart.
- Ross Marquand now becomes the second Red Skull actor to voice Xavier after Cedric Smith.
- Travis Willingham voices Sebastian Shaw after previously voicing fellow Inner Circle club member, Mastermind in Marvel Anime: X-Men. The man himself confirms it.
Cross-Regional Voice Acting: Between the Toronto voice pool of the original 1992 series and the Los Angeles pool.
Development Gag: In the season 1 finale, Bishop addresses Forge as "Daniel". While Forge has never been given an official birth name in the comics, Chris Claremont's original outline for the character identified him as "Daniel Lone Eagle", a name which has never appeared in any incarnation of the X-Men universe until now.
Executive Meddling: According to Beau DeMayo, two characters he couldn't use were Deadpool and T'Challa. While no reason was given for Deadpool, DeMayo claims that Kevin Feige has put an embargo on T'Challa because of Chadwick Boseman's death. However, it works here as Black Panther showed up masked for two unvoiced cameos in the original series, thus making this Panther being T'Challa's father T'Chaka easier to swallow.^note
Fake American: English actor Theo James uses an American accent in his role as Bastion.
Fake Nationality: Ancient Egyptian Apocalypse is voiced by American actor Ross Marquand in the present day and Sierra Leonean-born American actor Adetokumboh M'Cormack as his past self.
Inspiration for the Work: Beau DeMayo acknowledges that the inclusion of Happy Nation inspired two aspects. The series' production code name, and "Remember It's" Gala sequence in the animatic.
International Co Production: Between Marvel, the Ontario Film Board (credited as Ontario Creates), Studio Mir, and Tiger Animation. The Chinese-based Red Dog Culture House and Canadian-based Jam Filled Entertainment also contributed further animation duties.
No Dub for You: In a rather unusual move for a Marvel Comics work done by Disney, the show doesn't have a Japanese dub, despite previous animated X-Men shows, including the series this one's a follow-up to, having Japanese dubs.
The Original Darrin: Cal Dodd returns to his 90s role as Wolverine, thus making '97 the first time since 2004 that the character isn't voiced by Steve Blum in an animated project.
The Other Darrin: English version:
- Holly Chou takes over as Jubilee from Alyson Court, who voluntarily stepped down from the role due to the increasing practice of casting non-white characters with voice actors who match their ethnicity following the 2020 George Floyd protests. Court was instead cast as Abscissa, a virtual reality version of Jubilee who appears in "Motendo/Lifedeath, Part 1".
- Gambit is voiced by A.J. LoCascio, rather than Chris Potter or Tony Daniels. Potter instead appears as the voice of Cable.
- As detailed below, Jean is voiced by Jennifer Hale, rather than Catherine Disher. Like Court and Potter, Disher returns as the voice of another character, in this case, Dr. Valerie Cooper.
- Ray Chase replaces Norm Spencer as Cyclops, though in this case, it's due to the latter's death in 2020, making a recasting unavoidable.
- Similarly, Matthew Waterson takes on the role of Magneto from the late David Hemblen who also passed away in 2020.
- Lawrence Bayne is replaced as Cable by Chris Potter, who was already replaced as Gambit. Bayne now voices the X-Cutioner so that Potter can have a new role in the series proper.
- Xavier is voiced by Ross Marquand instead of Cedric Smith. He also replaces Neil Ross, Simon Templeman, and (unavoidable, given his stroke and resultant retirement) Tom Kane as Dr. Doom, and both John Colicos and James Blendick as Apocalypse.
- Bishop is voiced by Issac Robinson-Smith instead of Philip Akin. Robinson-Smith also voices T'Chaka instead of Beau Weaver.
- Morph is voiced by J. P. Karliak instead of Ron Rubin, who instead appears as the voice of President Kelly. Karliak also voices the Hulk in place of Lou Ferrigno or Ron Perlman.
- Robert Kelly is voiced by Ron Rubin instead of the late Len Carlson.
- Forge is voiced by Gil Birmingham in place of Marc Strange, due to his passing in 2012.
- The Sentinels are voiced by Eric Bauza instead of the late David Fox.
- Bolivar Trask is now voiced by Gavin Hammon instead of Brett Halsey.
- Henry Gyrich is now voiced by Todd Haberkorn instead of Barry Flatman.
- Callisto and Magik are now voiced by Courtenay Taylor instead of Susan Roman and Tara Strong respectively.
- Shard is now voiced by Kimberly Woods instead of the late Kay Tremblay.
- Leech, Mojo, Banshee, and Gladiator are now voiced by David Errigo Jr. instead of John Stocker, Peter Wildman, Phillip Williams, and Richard Epcar respectively.
- Spiral is now voiced by Abby Trott instead of Cynthia Belliveau.
- Sebastian Shaw is now voiced by Travis Willingham instead of David Bryant.
- Moira MacTaggert and Emma Frost are now voiced by Martha Marion instead of Lally Cadeau and Tracey Moore respectively.
- Lilandra is now voiced by Morla Gorrondona instead of Camilla Scott.
- Josh Keaton replaces the aforementioned Lawrence Bayne from the original series and David Hayter from Spider-Man: The Animated Series as Captain America. The same episode also sees the late John Vernon replaced as General "Thunderbolt" Ross by Michael Patrick McGill.
- The Latin American Spanish dub is dubbed in Mexico, rather than using the Argentinian voice actors used from the previous series in the Disney+ version, though with different voice actors from the Mexican dub used in the very first version for TV:
  - Arturo Mercado Jr. replace Gerardo Reyero as Cyclops.
  - Mauricio Perez replaces the late Herman López as Wolverine.
  - Karla Falcón replaces Rocío Prado as Rogue.
  - Oscar Rangel replaces Bardo Miranda as Beast.
  - Gabriela Guzman replace Magda Giner as Storm.
  - Héctor Emmanuel Gómez replace Roberto Carrillo as Gambit.
  - Regina Tiscareño replace Pilar Escandon as Jubilee.
  - Eduardo Garza replace Alfonso Obregón Inclán as Morph.
  - Salvador Delgado replaces the late César Arias as Professor Charles Xavier.
  - Regarding the above voice actor, Sebastián Llapur curiously replaced Salvador Delgado as Bishop.
- None of the surviving voice actors from the French dub of X-Men: TAS came back to reprise their roles in this series.
- It happens to most of the Brazilian dub cast. The few exceptions are mentioned in Role Reprise below.
Promoted Fanboy:
- The day before the series debuted, Holly Chou (the new voice of Jubilee) posted a childhood photo of herself dressed as Storm to celebrate being cast.
  Holly: This pic of me on Halloween circa 1994 pretty much sums up my feelings today. Same, 9-year-old Holly. Same.
- A.J. LoCasio shared a picture of himself cosplaying as Gambit before being cast in the role for this series.
- Henry Gyrich's new voice actor Todd Haberkorn shared an Instagram post about how happy he got to be in the show after watching the original series as a kid.
- One of the storyboarders on the show took the opportunity to work on Cyclops specifically because he used him as the anchor character for his team in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Production Posse: Beau DeMayo reunites with Theo James, Jennifer Hale, J. P. Karliak, Courtenay Taylor, and Abby Trott from The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
Real-Life Relative:
- Matthew Waterson (Magneto) and Rachel Kimsey (Cable's Computer Cube) are married in real life. Kimsey was very supportive of the show's revival and her husband now voicing Magneto.
- In the Latin American Spanish dub, Héctor Emmanuel Gómez (Gambit) and Karla Falcón (Rogue) are married in real life. By coincidence or not, this is quite fitting, since the former character flirts with the latter.
Role Reprise:
- Alison Sealy-Smith, George Buza, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, Christopher Britton, and Adrian Hough return as the voices of Ororo Munroe/Storm, Hank McCoy/Beast, Logan/Wolverine, Rogue, Mister Sinister, and Nightcrawler respectively.
- In an example relating to a different animated incarnation of the X-Men, Jennifer Hale reprises her role as Jean from Wolverine and the X-Men.
- In the French dub, Wolverine is voiced by Jérémie Covillault, reprising his role from Logan.
- In the Brazilian dub, the only voice actors to reprise their roles from the original cartoon are Sylvia Sallusti as Jean Grey, Jorge Vasconcellos as Beast, and Marcus Jardym as Banshee. Also, Professor X and Wolverine are voiced by Márcio Simões and Luiz Feier Mota respectively, both of them reprising their roles from X-Men: Evolution. As for Cable, he gets his voice actor from Deadpool 2, Guilherme Lopes.
- While none of the titular X-Men's Latin American Spanish voice actors reprise their role from the original animated series, some voice actors from other animated adaptations and even from the Marvel Cinematic Universe do reprise their roles:
  - Óscar Flores reprise his role as Captain America from The Super Hero Squad Show's first season dub.
  - Manuel Campuzano returns as T'Chaka from the 2018 Black Panther.
  - José Gilberto Vilchis also returns as Baron Zemo from The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Sequel Gap: This revival series was released 27 years after the original's conclusion.
Spoiled by the Merchandise:
- Magneto joining the X-Men as their new leader was meant to be a twist at first, with the first trailer instead depicting his return in a more sinister and antagonistic light. However, Hasbro produced a Marvel Legends figure of Magneto in his new hero costume, which wound up being revealed a few months before the show's premiere.
- Likewise, the second episode's twist of another Jean appearing was somewhat deflated by the same Marvel Legends assortment also including a figure of the Goblin Queen, Jean's clone from the comics.
Troubled Production: Just a week before the two-episode premiere, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that showrunner Beau DeMayo had been unexpectedly fired by Disney. At the time of his dismissal, DeMayo had already completed the writing for Season 2, and had loose ideas for a potential Season 3.
Word of God: Beau DeMayo confirmed that Bastion's mother is the racist waitress seen in the original series episode "One Man's Worth".
You Sound Familiar:
- In the Latin American Spanish dub, some voice actors from the original animated series return here on different roles:
  - Eduardo Garza, who previously voiced young Charles Xavier, now voice Morph.
  - Salvador Delgado, who previously voiced Bishop, now voice Charles Xavier instead.
  - Magda Giner, who previously voiced Storm, now voice Mother Askani.
  - Gisela Casillas (Jean Grey) now voice Rose Gilberti.
  - Pilar Escandon (Jubilee) now voice Nina da Costa.
  - Cesar Soto (Mr. Sinister and Captain America) now does random voices instead.
- In the French dub of X-Men: TAS, Antoine Tomé voiced various characters, such as Apocalypse during Season 3. In this revival, he's instead given the role of Mister Sinister.
