The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

[up][up] It’s more a specific character dying among the others, then gets killed off in a similarly gruesome fashion a couple of weeks later in his own show.

The hindsights in Team Fortress 2 page felt shoehorned for me. For instance:

  • In "The Sound of Medicine", we see a brief scene of the RED Sniper taking aim at a horde of robots, before being quickly headshot by a robot Sniper with a Huntsman. This scene (unfortunately) reflects the state of Casual play all too well in 2020, as the main game saw a massive surge of Sniper aimbots taking over casual servers, with players having to work together to out-vote the cheaters on a near-constant basis.

How's this have any relation with the aimbot problem in the future? Unless you're telling me that robot sniper headshots everyone on the map.

And this one:

  • One of the Spy's voice lines for dominating the Soldier became a lot harder to hear after the passing of Soldier's voice actor, Rick May, to the point where many players want the punchline to be changed to the Spy sobbing:
Spy: Oh, Soldier, who will they ever find to replace you? ANYONE! (he laughs)

Isn't death inevitable? If so, then this example is pretty meaningless.

And lastly, these two:

  • The gameplay footage at the end of Meet The Sandvich is identical to that of the end of Meet The Heavy, only the Heavy is now eating instead of gunning down BLU. The BLU team members are still dropping like flies, however, as if to imply that RED Heavy wasn't actually responsible for any of the deaths in the first video.

  • One of the Demoman's injured noises (most usually from being ignited) sounds identical to the Rabbids.

I can't see how two are examples of Hilarious in Hindsight.

[up][up]Yeah, it does seem like a stretch since Netflix has changed naturally like all companies over time.

IDK, Netflix's tendency to cancel shows after a short run is infamous enough that this is valid Harsher to me. It's not just that businesses naturally change or that a few shows got cancelled, it's that they make it their business model to cancel shows with decent viewership because they prioritize new subscribers (and thus new shows) over returning ones. Sure, maybe they think they had to take that direction, but it is absolutely a problem people have with Netflix compared to the praise they originally got for saving cancelled shows. It's a total 180 and ironic enough to note.

[down] Oh huh, I somehow missed the part where it was complaining about revivals — I skimmed the last sentence and thought those were all revivals that had been Cut Short. I agree that doesn't hold much water, but I think my take actually might work as a rewritten example.

[up]It doesn't seem to mention Netflix's tendency towards shows being Cut Short, just the quality of their more recent adaptations. Plus I thought the live action Death Note was relatively well received.

From The Blair Witch Project. This seems like it's Creator Backlash and Typecasting.

[up][up] Um... no it wasnt.

And I agree with mewtron on the whole Netflix sour reputation thing... but this might be subject to change and I dont know if we want an example to be an Unintentional Period Piece... lol.

Serial Mom:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Ms. Jenson, who returns movies to the video store without rewinding them, is seen returning Ghost Dad. See, back in the 90s, being a Bill Cosby fan characterized you as wholesome - not anymore, after all his sexual assault accusations in 2015. Then again, this may retroactively validate the point Chip was making that people who watch nothing but inoffensive films are very twisted, the wholesomeness being hollow.

This feels like a stretch. Are we going to have to add a Harsher in Hindsight entry to every work where someone was a fan of Bill Cosby?

[up][up][up]Yeah, it looks more like a Creator Breakdown, and makes her life seem more dour than it is.

[up]Plus, it’s such a minor thing that the character owns a single VHS starring Bill Cosby, along with the reasons you mentioned, make it a pretty poor example.

Given the character even has her same name, the Heather Donahue example might hold some weight, but only if they can name some more specific examples of strife that evokes her Creator Breakdown, otherwise it's too vague.

Plus I'm pretty sure the real Heather never experienced anything as bad as what happened in the film.

This has been in the back of my head for a long time, so I want to know if I should add it or not:

In Kingdom Hearts III, there's an item called the Mask Rosette that protects against the "Sneezing" status effect, and there's a treasure chest that contains one in the Kingdom of Corona. Just one of these things alone would not count, but two or more at the same time sounds like enough of a coincidence to qualify as Harsher in Hindsight. But there are reasons why I have doubts about adding it:

  • The item isn't completely exclusive to the Kingdom of Corona, since you can buy some from in-game shops or make them through crafting.
  • The Sneezing status effect is contextualized as a symptom of pollen allergy, rather than a coronavirus.
  • The item's illustration shows a gas mask rather than a face mask.

From Eurovision Song Contest 2024

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The choice to retain "United by Music" as the permanent slogan from this edition onwards aged particularly poorly when this year was likely one of the most controversial and divisive — if not the most controversial — in the entire history of the Contest.
    • Iceland finishing last place in their semi with a song called "Scared of Heights" when, just months earlier, they briefly topped the betting odds to win. note
    • In one hell of an irony, The Netherlands's "Europapa", a song about bringing Europe together, became the first (and hopefully only) disqualification hours before the finals began, which made a lot of fans unhappy and divided, especially the Dutch.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: This edition's branding was inspired by the Northern Lights. The night before the grand final, a wave of real Northern Lights sweeped upon a large part of Europe, going as south as some regions of Italy and Romania.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The televote, jury, and overall places of Ireland's entry — which has been readily described as "satanic" — resulted in a Number of the Beast.
    • This year's unconventional stage was shaped like a Greek cross (a cross with arms of equal length). Come the grand final and the winner is Switzerland, a country whose flag is a white Greek cross in a red field.

The Number of the Beast one for Ireland's Bambie Thug (with their "Crown the witch" slogan) feels valid, and maybe the Northern Lights coincidence... but not convinced about the others?

Regarding the Kingdom Hearts III example, something that I remembered is that the sneeze status effect is most prominent in Corona (it's used by the miniboss Chief Puff and the end boss Grim Guardianess), so it's most likely that a player would only wear the Mask Rosette during that part of the game.

Found this on YMMV.The Kings Man:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: It can be amusing to realize that the two members of the Flock who survive and meet Hitler are played by Daniel Brühl and August Diehl, who you might recall from a certain film where they both played Nazi villains (Frederick Zoller and Major Dieter Hellstrom, respectively). It's enough to make you wonder if the Basterds would have been Statesmen!

I seem to recall that this film was released after Inglourious Basterds, so there's no hindsight here. Would it be okay to remove this?

[up]Yes.

YMMV.My Little Pony Nakama Is Magic

I PM'd the troper who added it that Hindsight only applies to/goes under the earlier work made this, not causing it. They replied that this fic came out before that point in the dub so not misuse, the replied separately that they realized it's misuse as Hindsight requires it be a prediction.

This is the first I've heard of the prediction criteria, does it require that? And is this a valid Hindsight example or not?
