The first trailer is here!
Coming 2024! The cast members who voiced Kraft and Holo in the OG anime are back!
Confirmed by the creator to be a remake with changes!
I am honestly loving seeing my childhood/adolescent classics getting modern remakes.
It's finally time to revive this thread, because Holo walks among us again. Passione nailed the premiere, and they're already teasing us with a wink that they'll be doing a more complete, faithful adaptation of the novels.
I repeat: Holo walks among us again! Surreal.

Never watched the original anime or read the novels though I did read some of the sequel novels. Good to hear the remake is good on its own so far. Probably won't get around to it for a bit because I'm busy catching up on other anime/shows but I'll have to give the remake a try.
This was a really weird watch experience. It's been well over a decade since I watched the first anime, and I'll admit that my memories of it are fuzzy, and I've never been a superfan or someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of the series. Still, this felt like someone you don't know very well telling a version of a story you've heard before - skipping some parts you're pretty sure you remember, adding things you don't really recognize, and so on. Which isn't bad on its own, but then you get to the production values and...
I've gotta say, the music is fantastic (that's Kevin Penkin for you), but everything else feels so stiff and lifeless, especially the lipsyncing. I just have to wonder why they would bother starting the adaptation over if they weren't going to throw Lavish Production type money at it.

It's been fun. That's odd, I didn't notice anything wrong with the lip-syncing. I do agree that I would have liked more oomph in the production, but honestly this is already miles better than the previous anime (comparing their premieres, at least).
A couple of perks we would get from this new adaptation: it can be more faithful to the novels, and it might adapt to the end!
As far as the previous anime's production quality goes, that I can't speak to given how long it's been. But by the same token I don't think my issues with the 2024 version's animation and art direction are due to loyalty to the original anime.
I will say that I remember the first section flowing better in the original anime, though.
It's been fun.Hm, could be a fun idea for me to rewatch the old anime, then, because from my fuzzy memories, the only major differences would be 1) the opening sequence and 2) they swapped out anime-original Chloe for Yarei, which also removes all the flirting scenes between Lawrence and Chloe.
Know what, I’ll do just that!

That would be good to see, actually! My fuzzy recollection also places Lawrence's talk with Chloe/Yarei before he meets Holo, without him leaving the village and then coming back, for one.
It's been fun.Seems like that sequence of events is the same in the previous anime. Lawrence also leaves town, and goes back after meeting Holo.
Yeah, can confirm as a novel reader. I mostly just wanna see novel 4 get adapted, so Holo can bag on the church.
Also Eve might finally get some screentime.
I will admit... I like the original ending better. But "Ringo Hiyori" is something special.
Also is it just me (or my memory playing tricks) but is Koshimizu Ami pitching her voice slightly higher to play Holo in this version than she did in the original?
Still great to see Lawrence and Holo back.
Yeah, I've heard people say that and it does sound like the case. Fukuyama Jun's voice also sounds rather different... then again, he's not 30 anymore.
It's been fun.Lawrence does sound more gruff, yeah.
I think in Holos case it is deliberate as in the novels and here she looked a bit younger than in the old anime in her human form.
Yeah, in the books, she looks 16-17, which prompts a lot of weird looks from other merchants. Which is why he usually claims she's a nun he's escorting.
What I want to know is, if and when they dub this thing, will they bring back the original English cast? Because Brina Palencia was great as Holo;
She's still been doing the audiobooks, so I imagine she will.
It's interesting how the first episode of the new anime is basically a remake of the first episode of the old anime, just with a bigger budget and revamped character designs that look more like the novel illustrations.
Sure, Yarei is back and we get the prologue, but all the story beats are mostly as they happened in the anime, not the light novel.
Is there any additional narration? That's the biggest thing the original anime missed.
Episode 2: It feels like yesterday when I was enraptured by the silver coin debasement arc. Time for some economics.
Two points of comparison to the old anime. I'm not sure I prefer Penkin's more "cinematic" soundtrack to the original's more rustic ambience. However, I've settled on liking the new voicework. Lawrence and Holo sound considerably wiser and more mature, and there's more emotional depth to their lines, which makes sense since the seiyuu have had a ton of practice since then.
It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure the discussion about wolves is new, or at least didn't happen this soon.
I'm definitely remembering bits and pieces of the economics plots here. Maybe that will help me understand the more complicated schemes now that it's my third time seeing them.
Holo and Lawrence's dynamic is still the main draw, though. Something still feels weirdly stiff to me - either the compositing or the posing, not sure which - but man, their chemistry is just as good as it was in 2008.
I definitely remember it, so it's not new, but it does feel like it came a bit faster this time. It's been a very long time since I read the novels, so maybe the 2008 anime spaced it out a bit more and this is where it happens in the books.

It's been fun.Episode 3: They’re lunging for the jugular with Holo’s cuteness here. The way she pined for those apples! If there’s one thing Passione is selling right, it’s the wolf. No wonder the currency seller immediately proposed to her. And as I’ve mentioned, I really do think the voicework is fantastic. Lawrence and Holo’s conversations have a more engaging verve to them now.
Excited for the payoff for the currency debasement in the next episode.

Oh wow that is extremely surprising news!
Light Novel style art does make me think a remake is more likely.
Although I would really like to see Season 3.
If it is a remake, I hope they don't rush the already adapted stuff.
Of course, it could be something completely different though.
