The Verge (11/25/2022): Splinter Cell is getting a… radio adaptation?

The adaptation starts on Dec. 2 on BBC radio. It's gonna run for eight episodes and it stars Will Poulter.

So Splinter Cell fans have asked for a new game, or a remaster, or at least an upgrade to current gen........and this is the response.

I mean, Ducktales 2017 also got a radio play adaptation, so I wouldn't say such a thing is entirely unprecedented. Maybe there is a feeling among creators that young people like extreme retro now?

And yeah, the BBC would be an obvious place for that. Radio plays do still exist, if you know where to look for them. The Archers is still going, I think.

I have to admit that I haven't looked at the details of this, just seen people talking about it, so I probably lack important information about why this isn't a terrible idea.

Isn't this just one of those tiny infiltrator robots? Those are plenty useful for hostage situations.

I assume they won't be acting autonomously. It's not like bomb disposal robots are, either, and they often perform very similar tasks (using explosives to disrupt explosive devices).

I can also see why "don't worry, we're giving them bombs instead of guns" was meant to be reassuring. For police, bombs are a very specific tool; whether you think cops use them too much is another story, but either way they're not going to be used as an answer to everything. Hell, the fact that a bomb blows up the drone might be a good thing, forcing the operators to think really hard on if they want to deploy an expensive piece of equipment.

I'm still worried about this, but it sounds far closer to a bomb-disposal bot than Terminator.

If they are being used for bomb disposal, that's a different matter. But we already have robots for that, so I don't get the problem.

A third of the comic's humor is about Feeling Their Age and another third is about Nostalgia Goggles, so I'm not sure the demographic appeal is really there.

The young person cited in The Rant seems to follow "Acquisitions, Inc", Penny Arcade's livestreamed RPG content, which is apparently very popular these days. Back In My Day, we played TTRPGs ourselves; we didn't watch other people play them.
