Mario Party Overboarded

Go To

Overview and Instructions

A lone comet flies over the Mushroom Kingdom once every thousand years. This comet contains the Millenium Star, a sacred object that heralded the commencement of festivities. After the universe was renewed once, Mario still had the chance to watch the comet fly across the sky again. But during mid-flight it shattered. The Celestial Eon, which controlled the balance and flow of the omniverse went missing all across planets and solar systems. As invaders ruptured from the twisting of reality as Peach’s Castle started being ambushed, Mario knew something was wrong. Luckily, the Star Spirits who stopped Bowser once and helped run the Dream Depot noticed this and enlisted heroes and unwilling villains to combine together to stop the legion of foes who have secured pieces of the artifact, believing it would grant them wishes and power. The party commences like never before.

4 players every board work to gather stars and coins in order to play multiple boards in a game usually referred to as Mario Party. Using a Dice Block usually numbered 1-10, they move across spaces in set paths in order to reach first place. While the game of Mario Party itself is competitive, story-wise every player is working towards the same goal to restore balance to each world and board they come across. Each of the four players are able to carry up to 3 items that have special effects. Each item they carry can only be used once so choose wisely. Every 6 boards are its own plotline, which is connected to the larger, main plot.

Every player can nominate a character in-between board intermissions. Make sure the post where a character in nominated is written in the outline nested within the folder for it below.

Mario Party knowledge is required, but only the basic essentials. If you know how a game of Mario Party works (the Gamecube games and 8 are recommended but not required for game knowledge), you’re fine.

Almost all actions that happen during board play is controlled by the GM (currently leafsaber47). Unique content will be explained either at the explanation update before the board officially begins, and item rules will be recapped and/or explained as a sort of footnote to every update once a player gets them or arrives at the shop for the first time during a turn.

Spaces and how they look on the board map
  • Blue Space - Gives the player 3 coins. Appearance is exactly what it says on the tin.
  • Red Space - Takes away 3 coins from the player. Appearance is exactly what it says on the tin.
  • Event Space - If the player lands on this space exactly the number of spaces to move across as shown on their dice a event happens that automatically is written about in the update. A green space with a question mark.
  • Miracle Space - Initiates Chance Time. The two players and the resulting trade are determined by the GM. A green space with a stylized star on it.
  • Star Space - A space that can’t be landed on but will automatically give players a star if they have the right amount of coins to purchase it (usually 20). A unique appearance shared with the Orb Space but with a golden star instead of a red orb. If a person during the turn has bought the star for sale, the update will say where the Star Space moves to next immediately after the star is bought.
  • Evil Space - A space that initiates a random negative effect on the user based on who is the villain behind the current events in the story. A generic Bowser Space with black background with a red skull and crossbones symbol.
  • Lucky Space - If the player lands on this space, they will be transported to a separate area of the board filled with Blue Spaces and coins that lead the player usually to a free star. If they end up getting the free gift and they have moves left on the dice, they return to the board on the Lucky Space with all remaining moves forfeited. A yellow space with an eighth note in orange.
  • Battle Space - If the player lands on this space, a side scene where the Battle Mini-Game process is initiated prompting players to choose three minigames for them to decide on. Run by Bombette from Paper Mario, she will always choose the minigame which was picked the least when a tie occurs. Up for grabs are coins waged by all players. Lower pots than what Bombette expects will happen. Is a green space that features her likeness.
  • Duel Space - If the player lands on this space, they will decide on who to duel with, which their target is decided by the GM. A duel minigame commences, and the winner of the minigame will steal coins and/or a star from the loser. The winner’s loot will be determined by the GM. Represented by crossed swords in purple colors and background.
  • Orb Space - Can’t be landed on like the Star Space but will give a random orb to a player who passes it, which is revealed when they pass it.

    Common Events
  • Capsule Machines - Will give you a random orb item if a player who interacts with them has 2 or less items in their inventory. Appears a caricature of itself.
  • Shop - If their player happens to pass by the shop during their move and has at least 5 coins and is not under a transformation effect, they may purchase one item from the shop’s selection in the current turn. Only one appears per board. Appears as a common real-life shop symbol.

    How to Nominate
  • Character Name: - (link to image of character)
  • Series:
  • Personality (think of it as a backbone to a unique CPU in the Mario Party games. How do they behave during minigames and board play, what do they do with certain and all items, what minigames do they prefer and do well at, and what bonus star do they want the most?):

Character Name: Sorbet Shark Cookie

Series: Cookie Run

Personality: Sorbet Shark Cookie was once, well, a shark who wanted to join bands of pirates in their parties, but was sad because he would scare them all away. To this end, he turned himself humanoid through unknown means, at the cost of his voice—now all he can say is bubble noises. He tends to move slowly on the land, and doesn't particularly care for the water (going back in the water turns him back into a shark), but even so, he's always smiling! He's especially excited to be actually in a so-called "party" for the first time, and hopes to befriend as many as he can!

  • Character Name: Yuri

  • Series: Doki Doki Literature Club

  • Personality: Yuri is shy and reclusive, yet below this quiet exterior is a burning passion. Often this passion is directed toward novels, but occasionally this passion has instead been aimed toward her romantic pursuits. She can sometimes be a little self-loathing toward herself, and she sometimes has totalitarian views about what books people can like, but ultimately she’s a nice girl who’s in it to win it.

Here we go, to the first board of Mario Party 6; and therefore the first update with Turn 1 out of 20! Hopefully I didn't managed to fuck up the formatting, grammar, or anything else. Edit: the image of the map didn't show the correct turn count. Derp.

Board 1 - Towering Treetop Prologue and First Turn

Eldstar brought the four supposed volunteers who were tasked to save worlds to a forest, when a giant smiling tree was waiting. They have arrived at the Towering Treetop.

After Eldstar explained the basics of Mario Party to each of the four players, a Mana Spirit hopped to the party and pleaded to them to listen to her.

Dryad: I am the Dryad. There is something terrible going on! A woman by the name of Lady Eboshi plans to reduce this forest to nothing but ashes. We have several things that you may want to listen to.

She listed the events of the board: Woodynote , who is generous enough to give all players coins, a beehive containing a multitude of angry insects, Fluff Airlines, which is still operating under the Shy Guys, the giant tree with a itchy nose that wants to sneeze, and a sleeping Venusaur, who will help someone drain coins from a foe for a short period of time if paid a small fee of 5 coins.

The shop owner, a different, more humanoid Dryad who went by the name of Calista arrived at the start of the board and greeted the cohorts.

Calista: Greetings. I am Calista from the land of Terraria. I have a store set up here that may help guide your path to vanquishing the terror who wants nothing other than ill will to nature. I have amassed various items; creatures were nice enough to give me items to help lend you all a hand. Please visit me when you have the chances.

Eldstar: Anyways, with those out of the way, please begin hitting your Dice Blocks to decide turn order.

Bandana Dee got a 9. Sir Pentious got a 3. Sorbet Shark Cookie got a 5. Yuri got a 1.

Eldstar: How interesting. Hopefully you folks are ready for your positions in the turn order. Bandana Dee is first, Shark Cookie is second, Pentious is third, and Yuri goes last.

Calista provided each of the partygoers with 10 coins each to start off the game, though she may be keeping an eye on Sir Pentious.

A star flew down onto a Blue Space next to a vine tipped with an acorn, creating the first star space.

Eldstar: And with that, I wish you the best of luck. Now let the party begin.

  • It's Bandana Dee's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 2, landing on a Blue Space, bringing his coin count up to 13.

  • It's Sorbet Shark Cookie's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 3, landing on a Blue Space, bringing his coin count up to 13.

  • It's Sir Pentious' turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 9. On the way he spotted a blooming flower and decided to crawl his way onto it, spitting him up high onto a Blue Space, where he stopped, gaining 3 coins, and bringing his coin count up to 13.

  • It's Yuri's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets her a 4, landing on a Blue Space, bringing her coin count up to 13.

Eldstar shows up on the start area and brings the four players to him, where he explains the main gist of the minigames.

Eldstar: I have sent you back here so you all will understand how we are going to get to the places where the minigames are played. I am always keeping watch of the spaces you land on; all of you landed onto blue spaces, so the first minigame will be 4-player. After this next minigame, you will be instantly transported to the setting of the minigame, so be prepared to end up somewhere else. This minigame happens to be Mecha-Marathon. I will send you all on your merry way; as the people there will be willing to tell you how to play.

Turn 1 Mini-Game - Mecha-Marathon (video of minigame)

The players soon are whisked away to a long, straight strip of a running track in a nondescript area near a Eastern-style high school. Nano Shinonome and a few Shy Guys happen to be there, where the robot girl reluctantly explains how the mini-game works. After the instructions are said, Shy Guys escort them to the starting line, where four Mecha Fly Guys are sitting. A gunshot from a M9 handgun from quite far away from them signals the start of the minigame, prompting them to start winding the toys up.

  • Bandana Dee's Mecha Fly Guy stopped flying after 18 meters.

  • Sorbet Shark Cookie's Mecha Fly Guy stopped flying after 17 meters.

  • Sir Pentious's Mecha Fly Guy stopped flying after 21 meters.

  • Yuri's Mecha Fly Guy stopped flying after 23 meters.

With Yuri's Mecha Fly Guy flying the farthest, Yuri wins the minigame and obtains 10 coins from a suitcase some Shy Guys were holding for such an occasion. After Yuri's coin total goes up to 23, the Shy Guys wave goodbye as portals take them back to the places they were once on in the Towering Treetop.

[Sorbet Shark Cookie sits on his space, absentmindedly fiddling with a telescope. He doesn't seem the least bit disappointed by his low dice roll, or the fact that he did the worst in the minigame. Then again, he's always smiling—it's a bit hard to tell if he's EVER disappointed.]

Last update for today, folks.

Towering Treetop - Turn 2

  • It's Bandana Dee's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 9. On the way he spots the same flower that Sir Pentious took. Knowing that the star is on that route, he jumped into the flower and was spat into the blue space that Sir Pentious was on, causing him to get irked when he was bounced on. Eventually, he landed on a Red Space, losing 3 coins and bringing his total back down to 10.

  • It's Sorbet Shark Cookie's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 10. He followed the same path that Bandana Dee and Sir Pentious took, sneaking past Sir Pentious's gaze due to his size difference with him, compound by the fact he seems to be very lightweight. He passes by an Orb Space and obtains a Waddle Dee Orbnote .

    • He lands one space away from the Lucky Space, a Blue Space where he gets 3 coins, as his total coin count rises to 16.

  • It's Sir Pentious's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 2. He ends up landing on the same space that Bandana Dee is on, losing 3 coins and returning his coin count to 10. Bandana Dee is visibly sweating as Sir Pentious lands on the Red Space.

  • It's Yuri's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets her a 2, landing on a Red Space, causing her to lose 3 coins, as her coin count went down to 20.

With 3 players on Red Spaces and Sorbet Shark Cookie on a Blue Space, a 3-vs-1 minigame was about to begin for the current turn. Portals appeared under their feet as the preparation for the mini-game commenced.

Turn 2 Mini-Game - Spinner Cell (video of minigame)

The players arrive at a factory, where numerous Bob-ombs are working. A Ripper from a rogue android company comes in and tells them about the minigame. Sorbet Shark Cookie is directed to a crane fitted with controls for a spiked contraption as the other three players are forcibly moved to a pit where a bridge stands in their way. The spiked machine moved towards the pit before the pit closed itself up as the minigame began.

The minigame ends with Sorbet Shark Cookie unable to knock out any of the players standing in the pit.

Another crane appears above the winners of the minigame, the players that Sorbet Shark Cookie tried to get rid of, spewing out 30 coins that were divided evenly with the three winners. Sir Pentious isn't amused about taking the win with two other "imbeciles".

[Sorbet Shark Cookie looks at Sir Pentious from a distance, but tries not to make it obvious that he's staring. He then looks at the Star space, within reach yet still a good distance away. He's the closest one to it, but he realizes that his persistently poor performance in the minigames might make him unable to pay for the Star once he passes it...!]

I'm not revealing the shop items' effects whenever a player stops by the shop until a player buys one of them. Making it a surprise.

Towering Treetop - Turn 3

  • It's Bandana Dee's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 5, landing on a Red Space causing him to lose 3 coins. He can no longer buy a star, as his total coin count is down to 17. He got a Chain Chomp Orbnote  from the Orb Space he passed by earlier.

  • It's Sorbet Shark Cookie's turn. He opts to use the Waddle Dee Orb he got earlier wishing for something that could aid him to his advantage. A Waddle Dee drops onto his space and gives him a Barter Boxnote  before taking off. After getting the item, he hits the Dice Block, netting him a 8. He passes by the shop where the Dryad of Terraria was in and decides to check it out.

    • Calista: Perhaps you would be interested in these wares?

    • The shop items included: Mini Mushroom (5 Coins), Spiny Shell (20 Coins), Lucky Lamp (30 Coins)

    • Sorbet Shark Cookie declines to purchase anything and leaves.

    • Calista: Come back when you have the chance to meet me again.

    • He passes by another Orb Space and obtains a Super Mushroom Orbnote . Immediately after that Orb Space was a Blue Space, where he stopped on. He gains 3 coins, making his coin count rise to 19.

  • It's Sir Pentious's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 2, passing by an Orb Space and landing on a Blue Space, where he gains 3 coins. His orb count is sitting at a suspiciously favorable 23. He did get a Mr. Blizzard Orbnote  from the Orb Space he did pass through earlier.

  • It's Yuri's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets her a 8, passing by an Orb Space which gave her a Sluggish Shroom Orbnote , and the flower that eventually led her to said Orb Space, not while trying to preserve her modesty in the process. She lands on the same Blue Space Sir Pentious is on, gaining 3 coins and having her coin count rise to 33. Yuri's eyes go empty as she looks suspiciously at a villain who's likely less stable than she is.

With Bandana Dee on a Red Space and the other 3 players on Blue Spaces, it meant it was time for another 1-vs-3 minigame. It was time for them to take on a multidimensional journey again as they head toward the place where the next minigame is.

Turn 3 Mini-Game - StratosFEAR! (video of minigame)

Three players land on a giant mushroom platform in the sky. A Lakitu tells them how the minigame works before a floating armada of Bullet Bill Blasters and Bandana Dee in a helicopter take flight towards the platform, starting the minigame.

  • Yuri is taken out by an incoming Bullet Bill.

  • Sorbet Shark Cookie and Sir Pentious collide with each other while jumping and move backwards into another Bullet Bill while the platform is moving down, taking the other two players out at the same time.

The Lakitu the opposing players to Bandana Dee met came back and reeled out a treasure chest containing 10 coins, which Bandana Dee takes with pleasure.

Towering Treetop - Turn 4

Fully recovered from the last minigame, the fourth turn begins as Bandana Dee is up first.

  • Bandana Dee hits the Dice Block netting him a 8. He takes the acorn-tipped vine to land right on the Star Space.

    • Eldstar: So I see. You've made it to the Star Space. Would you like to trade a Star for 20 coins?

    • Bandana Dee nods yes and pays the 20 coin fee to get his first star.

    • The Star Space moves towards a new spot, replacing a Blue Space that was one space near the event where a sleeping Venusaur is.

    • After collecting his first star, Bandana Dee ends up landing on an Event Space. Bees come out of the hives and sting him, making him lose the rest of his coins. The stings would've taken 10 coins in total from him.

  • It's Sorbet Shark Cookie's turn. He uses a Super Mushroom Orb before hitting the dice, causing him to be able to use three dice blocks. His three numbers ended up being 5, another 5, and a 6, summing up to 16.

    • He passes the Star Space due to being one coin short off the mark and decides to talk to the sleeping Venusaur.

    • Venusaur: <What do you want? Pay me 5 coins for me to use Leech Seed or back off.>

    • Sorbet Shark Cookie pays the Pokémon the fee and opts for its target to be Yuri. Yuri notices a series of mistletoe vines wrapping around her left leg. It didn't seem to hinder her movement, but Yuri could feel the pain.

    • He then takes the purple flower up to the Duel Space which he moves past. On the way to his destination are a wooden slide and two Orb Spaces. He had the time of his life on the slide, and managed to grab a Vampire Orbnote  and a Klepto Orbnote  before reaching the Event Space.

    • Giant Tree: Hey, can you please tickle my nose with this feather? My nose feels itchy...

    • Out came a big sneeze, which sent Bandana Dee tumbling down to the Red Space behind Sorbet Shark, and sent Yuri and Sir Pentious down to a Blue Space next to a ominous looking space in red and black.

    • Giant Tree: Glad to have that sneeze out of my system. Thank you!

  • It's Sir Pentious's turn. He opts to throw his Mr. Blizzard Orb onto a Blue Space five spaces away from him and then hits his Dice Block. Out came a 2. Pentious lands on a Blue Space, giving him 3 coins and raising his coin count to 26.

  • It's Yuri's turn. Five coins leave her inventory and are given to Sorbet Shark Cookie due to the vines wrapped around her leg from the Leech Seed. She hits her Dice Block and gets a 5, and ended up landing on Sir Pentious's Mr. Blizzard space, causing her to be buried in a pile of snow, removing the Sluggish Shroom Orb she had kept. Sir Pentious couldn't help but laugh at her misery.

Eldstar: Oh, this is new to the partygoers! Three players landed on spaces that aren't color designated for mini-games. It's going to be a 1-vs-3 mini-game again; hopefully the players know what to do for this next minigame!

Turn 4 Mini-Game - Pop Star (video of minigame)

The players are taken to a carnival where a balloon popping event is hosted, much to Sir Pentious's dismay. He takes the red balloon platform, while the other three take the blue balloon platform. A Goomba in a top hat announces the rules of the game via a microphone before stepping off and starting the minigame.

Sir Pentious's balloon ends up popping into confetti first. A Fly Guy comes and showers his area with 10 coins. Despite ending up the victor, Sir Pentious wasn't happy to win this mini-game where lives aren't at stake.

[Sorbet Shark is still in last, and he had to pass by the Star space, but he doesn't care all that much. With that Leech Seed active, he might be able to turn the tide soon—that is, if Leech Seed lasts more than one turn...

Oh yeah. He has those orbs as well. He looks at his Vampire Orb with a smile (well, a wider smile than usual).]

Nicolas Cage was more fortunate than the players who kept on getting stung by bees this turn. Tons of technical difficulties for this last update for today.

Towering Treetop - Turn 5

  • It's Bandana Dee's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 5, landing on a Blue Space that gives him 3 coins, as his coin count reaches a non-zero value.

  • It's Sorbet Shark Cookie's turn. As predicted, he uses the Vampire Orb and becomes a vampire shark. He ends up only getting 1 coin from all the other players, resulting in getting 3 coins in total.

    • He decides to hit the Dice Block to see if his standing changes. A 6 came out of the block. He ends up landing on a Red Space, rendering the Vampire Orb's coin gain moot. At least every other player lost a coin.

  • It's Sir Pentious's turn. Hitting the Dice Block nets him a 7, eventually landing on an Event Space. The bee hive rustles violently as a horde of bees and a Zinger assault Sir Pentious with bee stings, taking away all but 5 of his coins. Laser-Guided Karma at its finest.

  • It's Yuri's turn. Another 5 coins left her inventory as the leeched coins headed towards Sorbet Shark Cookie. Hitting the Dice Block nets her a 4, landing on the same space that Sir Pentious was on, losing half of the coins that Sir Pentious lost; bringing down her total coins to 7.

A 2-vs-2 mini-game was ready to start. Bandana Dee and Yuri share a team, while Sir Pentious and Sorbet Shark Cookie try to make their mismatched team work.

Turn 5 Mini-Game - Synch-row-nicity (video of minigame)

The players are taken to a scenic island with palm trees. A Bubblainian explains what both teams were supposed to do in the minigame. There are two boats floating in the water. A Merman that fled from Dracula's Castle sounded a horn, which signaled the players to hop into the boats and start rowing.

Against all odds, the team of Sir Pentious and Sorbet Shark Cookie cross the finish line first, despite clearly being at a disadvantage. Numerous dolphins with goggles swim towards the winner and splash up 20 coins onto the boat, which ends up divided evenly between the two winners.

[Sorbet Shark could've probably ended that minigame a lot quicker by turning into a shark and letting Pentious ride him to the finish line, but a) he didn't trust Pentious enough to do that, b) he really didn't want to turn back into a shark, and c) that would break the rules. At least he didn't have to do that to win! Now he's just happy he's not in last place anymore.]
