Knuckles (Sonic Series Event)

Well yeah, that's why I doubt Paramount will change course when it comes to sidelining the Sonic cast since they know they can get away with it. I do think it's certainly possible they can course correct but we'll see.

I've actually discussed with a friend of mine on Discord wondering it would see the show would see kind of success if the main character wasn't a white dude who replaced the black coded character played by Idris Elba.

Either way, I'm glad I caught the first episode on Youtube so I don't have to financially support Paramount for sidelining the character I wanted to see in a series named after him.

Your insistence on calling Wade "white" is honestly kind of weird considering the actor is Jewish.

I get why this criticism is being made, but I personally don't think it applies in this case. Most people watching Knuckles are watching it for Knuckles, a black-coded character played by Idris Elba, not (just at least) for the character of Wade. The show has high viewing figures mainly because people wanted to see Knuckles, and the generally good response the series has had is in spite of the fact Knuckles is barely in it (the idea its a good, fun show if you just accept it as a show where Knuckles is a side character), not because of it, so the show would likely have done similarly as well if not better were it focused more on Knuckles. I genuinely don't think there are many people who weren't going to watch this who were suddenly convinced when they found out the black-coded character wasn't the focus.

I don't think that any of that would have changed even if Wade wasn't a white Jew, the show is successful because people want Knuckles, and the generally positive response is in spite of the fact Knuckles is barely in it.

I should clarify I haven't watched the show yet so don't have an opinion on whether Knuckles is in it enough, or whether it is a good show in general (lots of Knuckles or not), and I definitely get why, beyond the general annoyance that a character you like is side-lined, it is disappointing that a black-coded character is side-lined (even if the reasons are most likely due to CGI cost), but I just personally disagree that this show is popular because a black-coded character is being side-lined when, if anything, it seems that it is in spite of that.

I do think its success is in spite of Knuckles being sidelined but as someone who does like Knuckles, the fact that the show has a pretty good first episode makes the rest disappointing and Paramount knows they can get away with sidelining the Sonic characters at this point to save on budget.

I should note that I’m not hating on Wade’s actor. He seems like he’s having a fun time with the role especially the musical scene but uhhh I’m here for Knuckles. And Wade is only funny in small doses.

Im less concerned about you "hating" on him and more concerned about you erasing a significant part of his heritage to (again, weirdly insistently) harp about hin being white, over and over.

Well I didn't know his actor is Jewish and please do forgive my ignorance. As shown above, I did drop that complaint once it was brought to my attention.

And I'm more focusing on how Knuckles is sidelined which again really sucks because he is black coded and this was a waste of representation for certain members of the audience.

In the future, if youre gonna focus on somebody's race that much (which again, is a really weird thing to do in the first place), you could at least bother to do the bare minimum of research to get it right.

So… do we think this show and Ted (2024) would count as dueling works?

They came out months apart, have wildly different target audiences and not a lot of overlap so...no.

about the only thing they have in common is the animated character in a live action setting though

@Arthur Eld. I have seen some debates over Wade, and there was a very heated one about how a cop replacing Knuckles was a very bad decision in light of recent events.

How much policing does Wade do in this series anyway? I thought he wanted to go do bowling.

I think with Knuckles and Wade, they wanted to give off a Sonic and Tom vibe with their relationship. What helped with those two though was Tom was a good straight-man to Sonic, he was more grounded and they both got equal time—or at the least Tom didn't overshadow Sonic. In this case, while Knuckles being the straight-man should work in theory, Wade dominated too much of the focus and it didn't balance out.

Honestly, this entire show has me wondering if Agent Stone could legitimately carry a show on his own since he's actually relevant to the plot AND popular with the fanbase.

I guess depending on how Sonic 3 ends, we could have Agent Stone working with Shadow.

So, if the Knuckles show got a second season and it only focused on Knuckles, would you watch it?

Obviously, I'd watch the Knuckles show for Knuckles.

I'm watching it for Idris Elba.
