Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Yeah, that's a thing that's always infuriating about that kind of "cull the characters the editors didn't grow up with" bullshit. They can't just shunt the characters off into limbo, they feel the need to kill them off in mean-spirited ways while whining about them not being "real" in comparison to the editors' preferred characters.

Cullen Bunn had to depower Andi himself because he was worried Marvel would kill her off cause they were in a "no more symbiotes" phase at the time.

I thought it was Mike Costa who depowered Andi? He gave the Mania symbiote to Lee Price.

Patrick's death did seem pretty spiteful. It wasn't even on-panel, Remender just said in an interview that Blackheart drowned him in a rain gutter.

Marvel and DC seem to have dialed back their "more deaths = better" phase in recent years, though. Heck, there was a recent DC story that revealed that several young children of superheroes who were supposedly killed to provide angst for their parents never died at all. You could tell the writers were really sorry.

[up]It's less that the writers were really sorry and more that the assholes behind such stories - such as Dan DiDio and his cronies - have begun being pushed out of both companies, so there's no longer these dickish figures hanging over writers and either pushing them to be edgy or giving special treatment to writers who tell them what they want to hear. Though some of it is also writers who were edgelords when they were younger to try and fit in with said crowd growing up and trying to get away from that kinda shit. Like how Mark Millar has apparently being getting a lot less over-the-top bleak with his comics as he's gotten older, to the point that one he did - Huck - was prompted by him being disgusted by "Superman but evil/edgy" takes.

[up][up][up] I remember hearing Andi had to be forcibly retired before being killed off.

I guess Price stealing her symbiote is the execution of that.

[up][up] Frank Miller also said he deeply regrets his "far-right edgelord" phase. Was rooted in PTSD from 9/11, according to him.

You never really know what motivates certain writers to put certain things in their stories.

[up][up]I'm still a little sore about Andi losing the Scream symbiote, as that's like the third most popular symbiote, and she was the only big female symbiote host. Also, Scream's one of the OG symbiotes, and the series with Scream and Andi actually gave Scream a bit of personality, which should be the point of symbiote stories, two beings sharing one body and working together. A symbiote isn't just a facing suit that gives you superpowers.

[up][up]Yeah, that's why a lot of people go a lot easier on Miller nowadays than they did in the 2000s and New 10s. To be specific, he was living in New York when 9/11 happened and personally witnessed it, leaving him with crippling PTSD which led to a spiral into depression and alcoholism that caused his writing and art to suffer terribly, as well as him to start spewing a lot of horrid bullshit bordering on bigotry. He's been on the road to recovery for a long while now and is still clearly grappling with a lot.

In all honesty, people should've probably picked up on that sooner, given Miller's Pre-9/11 writing was radically different from stuff like ASSBAR or Holy Terror in terms of style, themes, and general content. On a larger level, read anything by Miller prior to his depression era and you'll note he was center-to-left-leaning politically, making his reputation as a "far-right" writer kinda odd in hindsight. Like, seriously, nobody questioned why he was going from shitting on Ronald Reagan to wanting to write Batman killing Muslims?

Also, since Patrick's probably going to be Toxin in the third Venom movie, someone could retcon his and his families' death, especially since Toxin is a recurring character in Venom (2021) and Patrick died off-screen. Hell it's not even that hard to retcon, as demons tend to lie.

"That mini both bombed and was panned" The big villain was Razorfist, the dude with knives for hands who regularly gets his ass kicked by Shang-Chi. That was the guy we were supposed to take seriously as a threat to a symbiote. So, yeah, it was a weird story.

Even worse is that Silence has been a nothingburger so far.

Carnage's hive never amounted to anything, so the Life Foundation symbiotes are just kinda in limbo right now. And Silence's big moment outside her debut issue was to throw hands with Carnage...in the middle of his anime training arc, so he was of course immune to anti-symbiote powers at the time.

It's not even clear if Silence is an actual symbiote with a consciousness or a braindead symbiote a la the original Anti-Venom, so all that happened is that Andi lost a second voice to bounce off of.

Toxin has a pretty decent. I like it when symbiotes try to be creative with their stylings growing from the base of Venom's black & muscular and Carnage's red & skinny.

Toxin has a unique two-tone look, his upper body being orange while his lower body is like a darker blue. His middle section has a visceral covered in tendrils look, and his face makes him look like a demented Spider-Man.

SO he looks fairly distinct from his father and grandfather.

I did really like Toxin's design. But yeah, I gotta agree that his mini was pretty uneven. It had some brilliant ideas here and there, but ultimately didn't do it's cool premise very well.

Jon Haward, UK comics artist who drew many issues of the UK exclusive Panini Spider-Man comics amongst other titles like 20000 AD, has died aged just 58. You can check out some of his Spidey artwork in the obituary.

One of them involves a big battle inside Mephisto's realm with Spidey and several Marvel heroes. I wonder what year that was published?

The true difference between Miles and most other versions of Spider-man.

The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.[lol]

Context: The dude acting as Miles mentioned he has both a father (depending on the version) and a mother. A riot ensued via jealous Spider-People.

Really not every supporting character should be a hero.

It’s already an issue with Spider-Man especially in adaptations like the Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man cartoons constantly surrounding him with superhumans and spider-people.

[up][up] I like Spinneret. The problem is that Jackpot is just such a lame concept and her powers are vague as shit. Seriously, the writers keep milking that one line.

Plus she's hanging out with Paul for most of this story, and I don't think fans enjoy that for obvious reasons.
