As I think I've mentioned before, I like small keyboards because my fingers are short and my hands are tiny like the rest of me XD Large keyboards are not ergonomic at all for me. And I mostly need it for typing text. Function keys are good, though. I really like the keyboard on my little mac laptop because of all that, TBH. But I have particular requirements that don't hold true for many others, as I said.
Yeah, but you're thinking about inter-key spacing and key size, there, not the number of keys on the keyboard, which makes it a different question entirely.
Avatar SourceAs someone who actually uses the number pad to type numbers in abundance, the very thought of cutting it out or even reducing the size of the 0 key is absolute blasphemy.
Again, it's all personal preference.
Plus, I can always either get myself a numpad or switched to my full sized Ducky if I need it. Keyboard hobbying is expensive but incredibly custom.

Probably whatever you're looking at right now, even laptops tend to shy away from crimping the main keys unless they're netbooks or something. I think it's been basically the exact same... more or less forever, we'd probably be looking at typewriters for the origin.

Optimism is a duty.I'll never understand the idea of coming up with the ISO keyboard layout over the clearly superior ANSI layout.
For reference, the big difference between ANSI and ISO is the position of the "" key (above the Enter key in ANSI, right of the right shift key and left of the Z key in ISO). I absolutely cannot fathom how anyone needs the "" key so close as to obstruct the left shift key so badly, and I don't know how the typing of many European accented characters fits in with this design change specifically.
Though looking back my pinky does manage to stretch further than it used to, but I was so upset at having to use those damnable ISO keyboards in high school, with my pinky not stretching out that much at the time. It's like the MadCatz of keyboard designs.

I've mostly being using an ANSI layout for authenticity and having more keys (it gives an easy place to slot in a Fn key), but the swapped @ and " between the US and UK layouts does occasionally catch me out if I'm not paying attention. The one benefit of using a macbook for work is that it also does this even when it's a UK keyboard because... just Apple being Apple, for whatever reason.
Although, that's not quite the ISO layout.

Optimism is a duty.The characters ' and " being so similar is probably why this is so on a US keyboard, though I agree that " would be used more often than @. Certainly not as heinous as an entire key obstructing another with the latter being used far more often.
Maybe, but shift + ' IS a rather specific movement. Shift + 2 is way more permissive fingering.

I tried with some chart programs, but they are very tiresome to use since they weren't made for such job.
If you do the Windows button + . it'll open the Emoji toolbar and those can be found under Symbols, I've been using that a lot since my current laptop lacks a numpad.

Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Anyone got any laptop recommendations? I've had my current one sense 2021 but it's been having problems for awhile (Albeit relatively minor ones in the grand scheme of things.) and lately after awhile of use the fan will come on and stay on until I put it into hibernate/stop using it. I'm thinking it's time to get a replacement. That being said, I'd love some recommendations. My only real requirements (At the moment atleast.) are no Macs since Windows is my OS of choice and I like the familiarity and that it's not made by HP (Or any other company that supports/backs Israel to be honest. If there's not a lot of options I guess I'll have to make due.). The more storage available the better as well though it's not as important as the other requirements.
What's a relationship chart?
Diagram to illustrate relations between multiple parties. Love Chart for a fictional cast is one type, but can also be used for things like multilateral diplomacy.
Here's how I type weird characters.
Where possible, I used the AltGr method, because it's easier. However, I used the CloGaelach keyboard layout, which apparently isn't standard (and might be Unixoid-only, as a bunch of these don't work on the Windows PC I have to use at work).
Most people are aware that holding down the Shift key while pressing a key will result in a different character; for example, pressing ! gives !.
The AltGr key functions similarly; in many cases, holding down AltGr and pressing another key results in a character nor normally shown on the keyboard. For example, pressing AltGr+1 gives ¡. AltGr and Shift in conjunction can yield even more characters; for example, AltGr+Shift+1 gives ¹. In some cases, however, holding down AltGr and pressing a key does not input a character, but rather modifies the next character to be entered. For example, AltGr+w will put a dot on top of the next letter, so pressing AltGr+w and then pressing r yields ṙ. This functionality is technically known as a dead key; the term goes back to typewriters, where a dead key was one that would not advance the paper after being pressed.
For those characters that don't have an AltGr combination, I use a Compose key. Dedicated Compose keys were not uncommon on keyboards in the 1980s, but are rare nowadays; it is more common to assign another key to function as Compose. Scroll Lock and Pause/Break are good choices, since they are not used for anything else; this is why I live having a 105-key keyboard. On Linux and BSD, the Compose key is set from within the Settings section of your desktop environment; I believe MS Windows requires a third-party programme. Compose is a type of dead key that turns the next button pressed into another dead key; it may also be thought of as signifying that the next sequence of keypresses should be read as encoding a single character. And yes, Compose can interact with Shift and AltGr as well. In most cases, the characters following Compose can be entered in any order; for example, Compose,o,/ and Compose,/,o will both result in ø. For the rest of this post, Compose will be represented as Comp.
Several entire letters are hidden on the Irish keyboard, as well as a good number of alternate forms and ligatures.

Overdot
Many letters can take a dot on top, and there are a few ways to accomplish this. AltGr+h and AltGr+w function as dead keys that will put a dot on whatever letter comes next. The same can be accomplished with Comp,.. In the case of some consonants, it can be done more quickly by instead holding down AltGr while pressing the key. In the case of the lowercase letters i and j, the H, W, and Comp methods will remove the dot, which is useful for Turkish spellings; dotless ı can also be accomplished by entering AltGr+j.
(In modern Irish, a h after a consonant indicates it is lenitised, but in traditional orthography, this change was accomplished with a dot. The dot was replaced by a h because typewriters couldn't input the dot, but since modern text editors and word processors can do so easily, perhaps it's time to return to traditional orthography).

Grave accent
The grave accent fills the role of the fada in Gaelic, and is also part of French, though I've never been able to figure out what it actually does. Háček (caron)
The háček, or caron, is the one that looks like an inverted circumflex. The easiest way to enter it is with AltGr+v, which works as a dead key to put a chevron on the next letter. It can also be entered with Comp,v, Comp,c, or Comp,<.
The caron changes the pronunciations of S and C to SH and CH, which means we could spell words like šugar and čurč and be completely unambiguous. This is a diacritic both English and Irish should adopt.

Cedille (cedilla)
A cedille can be added to a copatible letter with AltGr+|, followed by the letter. Alternatively, it can be applied with Comp,,,<letter> to letters that cannot take ogoneks. (One would think that this combination would instead add a comma, but oh well)
The cedille is input with Comp and comma, as long as a cedille can be attached and an ogonek can't. The easiest way to attach a cedille to a letter is with AltGr+>. It can also be done with comp and comma, as long as the letter in question doesn't take an ogonek; Comp and semicolon does nothing to these letters. (For whatever reason, ķ looks like it has a comma, but appears to be a cedille).

Relatedly, I thought the compose key was in the X settings of all places. No idea if that's migrated over to Wayland. (As for AltGr, although standard on British keyboards, I think it's not generally available on a US keyboard layout—not a clue where that might leave European ones; I really guess it depends who was implementing what at any given moment).

Optimism is a duty.
Having a smaller keyboard doesn't give me more mouse space (or wouldn't, regardless), so I don't think that's a particularly big motivator for me. Plus, if my mouse space is constrained by the keyboard, I'd rather address the cause than limit actual functionality...
I do find it weird when it's the full 60% "I don't want function keys either" approach, I know it's not as much of a problem nowadays as it could be, but that's like... a lot of things that occasionally come up and then you need to go find the option manually. Seems infuriating.
